The Ivorian Ministry of Education continues to hold educators to high standards to improve teaching and learning as shown in national testing results. The minister’s call to excellence is having a rippling effect with improvement in math and language skills.
The teachers at Ecole Chrétienne Adonaï have received further training through the district. In June the teachers in all grades were sent to various schools to administer the end of year testing in order to ensure the progress of all. This has always been the case for fifth grade student testing, but this year it was extended to all grade levels.
As usual, all of Adonaï's students did well on their tests. See the attached pictures of some of ECA’s students who received certificates of excellence.
At the end of the school year we studied the book of Philippians with the ECA personnel with the theme of rejoicing in all things, blessings as well as sufferings. We looked at prayer strategies in Philippians 4:6-7 and how to apply God’s Word in our lives Philippians 4:8-9. This fall we will study the book of Colossians.
We appreciate your prayers and financial support for this ministry.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2015!
Jesus said: “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor” (Luke 4:18-19)
“Suppose one of you has a servant plowing or looking after the sheep. Will he say to the servant when he comes in from the field, ‘Come along now and sit down to eat’? Won’t he rather say, ‘Prepare my supper, get yourself ready and wait on me while I eat and drink; after that you may eat and drink’? Will he thank the servant because he did what he was told to do? So you also, when you have done everything you were told to do, should say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty.’” (Luke 17:7-10)
We thank the Lord for His leading and guidance these past two years. We missed sending out our Christmas 2013 newsletter as we had a very busy year and Christmas season.
2013 brought several changes to our lives. Our son finished his bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and found a job at a university which allows him to gain experience and take courses towards a master’s degree in Informatics.
Cathy began teaching French in a public middle school nearer to home in Fall 2013. Our school district is one of the few in the U.S. to introduce foreign languages to all students as a core course beginning in sixth grade. She has enjoyed the challenge and opportunity to work with other teachers using a progressive 21st century curriculum.
The prayer ministry which began in our home in January 2009 ended in December 2013 with follow-up prayer throughout 2014. The Lord has given us new assignments and has led Lucien in a continued ministry of school administration and oversight, as well as spiritual warfare and intercessory prayer in the body of Christ Jesus and in the power of the Holy Spirit.
The situation in Côte d’Ivoire has not changed much since our last letter. The current government is a type of dictatorship which favors the ethnic group which is in power and maintains political prisoners. A political and economic malaise reigns in the country producing insecurity and stifling progress. The lack of competent leadership in the country has brought much unemployment and many strikes at the university, in governmental offices, and in the private sector. The current colonial structure favors investment by the French, but frustrates national and other international investors.
Proverbs 13:12 states, “Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life.” Many are living with emotional damage and frustration as they struggle to make a living.
Please pray with us for God’s intervention for peaceful and positive change during the 2015 presidential elections in Côte d’Ivoire.
In the midst of uncertainties and economic challenges, the faculty and staff at Ecole Chrétienne Adonaï continue to testify to God’s goodness and leading. In spite of modest incomes, they persevere in living out their faith before their students, parents, government officials and the community. Their commitment is evident as each year all of their fifth grade students succeed on their entrance exams for middle school.
A prayer for Côte d’Ivoire:
In the name of Jesus, I stand in the gap for those that the enemy has smitten their life down to the ground. I plead the blood of Jesus over those whom the enemy has persecuted their souls. I prophesy light to those whom the enemy has made to dwell in darkness. Lord, have mercy on those who are overwhelmed within and are desolate at heart. (A prayer from Kim Daniels inspired by Psalm 143:3-4)
Pray that affliction will not arise a second time in our life, in the name of Jesus. Henceforth, let no principality, power, ruler of darkness, spiritual wickedness in the heavenliness and local wickedness trouble Côte d’Ivoire for we bear in our bodies the mark of the Lamb of God (Ephesians 6:12). “Whatever they plot against the Lord he will bring to an end; trouble will not come a second time” (Nahum 1:9).
“For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me’” (Matthew 25:35-40).
“To him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy— 25 to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore! Amen” (Jude 24-25).
Revision, Renew, Recap News from 2013 to 2014 – God’s promises, faithfulness, and more
When God says He means:
Revelation 3:10 “Since you have kept my command to endure patiently, I will also keep you from the hour
of trial that is going to come on the whole world to test the inhabitants of the earth.”
Revelation 13:10 “If anyone is to go into captivity, into captivity they will go. If anyone is to be killed with
the sword, with the sword they will be killed.” This calls for patient endurance and
faithfulness on the part of God’s people.
Romans 8:31-34 "What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against
us? He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also,
along with him, graciously give us all things? Who will bring any charge against those
whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. Who then is the one who condemns? No
one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of
God and is also interceding for us.”
Psalm 27:1-2 "The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of
my life—of whom shall I be afraid? When the wicked advance against me to devour me, it is
my enemies and my foes who will stumble and fall.”
Isaiah 50:7 "Because the Sovereign Lord helps me, I will not be disgraced. Therefore have I set my face
like flint, and I know I will not be put to shame.”
Romans 9:33 As it is written: “See, I lay in Zion a stone that causes people to stumble and a rock that
makes them fall, and the one who believes in him will never be put to shame.”
Jeremiah 20:11 "But the Lord is with me like a mighty warrior; so my persecutors will stumble and not
prevail. They will fail and be thoroughly disgraced; their dishonor will never be forgotten.”
Proverbs 19:21 "Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.”
Proverbs 21:1 In the Lord’s hand the king’s heart is a stream of water that he channels toward all who
please him.
Job 5:12 He thwarts the plans of the crafty, so that their hands achieve no success.
Psalm 24:1-2 "The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it; for he
founded it on the seas and established it on the waters.”

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2013!
You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And the things you have heard me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others. 2 Timothy 2:1-2
We thank the Lord for allowing us to see some of the fruit of our labor this year 2012.
We received a note of thanks from Modeste, who thanked us for allowing him to serve at Adonaï Christian School which allowed him to complete his doctoral thesis and become a university professor.
We enjoyed a visit from family living in Dakar, Senegal. The two oldest children were able to attend classes at a Christian high school here in Columbia, SC for two weeks in order to improve their English skills. The younger children attended elementary school classes for one week as well.
Our son is a senior at USC Upstate this year. He plans to graduate in May 2013 with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and a minor in Mathematics. Though he has been very busy with computer science classes this past semester, he has put together his resume and begun the next step of job hunting. He hopes to find either an internship or job in his field this summer.
A recap on Côte d’Ivoire – On December 24, 1999 there was a first coup d’état which began a long period of instability which continues today. On September 19, 2002 the rebellion which split the country in two began and led up to a violently disputed presidential election in 2010. This led to the arrest of President Laurent Gbagbo and many other political figures on April 11, 2011 which was a peak of the effects of colonization. Rather than bringing peace there is still aggravated insecurity in the country with many political leaders still in prison and others still being pursued.
Please claim Hebrews 10:36 for the people of Côte d’Ivoire: “You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.”
Psalm 136

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2012!
God’s protection of Ezra when he asked for deliverance from his enemies and protection from ambushes, “On the twelfth day of the first month we set out from the Ahava Canal to go to Jerusalem. The hand of our God was on us, and he protected us from enemies and bandits along the way. So we arrived in Jerusalem, where we rested three days.” Ezra 8:31-32
The year 2011 has brought much heartache, but also much protection and deliverance from the Lord.
As we wrote in June, the school year was violently interrupted for Adonaï Christian School in March when rebel forces, armed by UN troops led a coup d’état. The neighborhood around the school was pretty much deserted as people fled for their safety and the school closed (along with the other schools in the country) from March to June 6th. The 5th grade teacher’s home was pillaged and burned, so he lost everything. He and his family, by God’s grace, were able to flee to another city. The school personnel and the school families were seriously traumatized and living on the bare minimum as salaries were not paid during that time. They also needed to catch up on the rent and utility bills for the school and their homes.
After the school started back in June, the students had class until the end of July. The national exam for 5th graders was given in August and by God’s grace most of our students passed it. We were able to help them catch up on some of the back rent and school reopened October 7th. In spite of the fact that many students did not return due to the political crisis, enough new students enrolled to fill the classes. Please pray for the school personnel and families that the Lord would give them the courage, strength and wisdom (Joshua 1:9; Luke 2:52) to go through the current situation and favor before God and men, including the current authorities. “May the Lord God empower you with wisdom and favour for good success, and also grant you victorious laughter that is full of glory, as you join other brethren world wide for this service, in the peerless name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
We continue to be appalled at the manner the new authorities lead the country. The atmosphere is still not one of security. People lose their government jobs for no apparent reason except ethnic background. The education system is not totally restored as the university is still closed with no assurance of when it will reopen. International mail does not get through and phones are tapped. Think of it this way – we have our presidential elections and even though our Supreme Court declares the winner, a foreign country backs an armed rebellion which says another candidate has won. The foreign country then proceeds to arm the supporters of their candidate and we have to accept that person as our president. Then he places his supporters at all the key positions within our government. This is what is happening in Côte d’Ivoire.
The new government just held the legislative elections, but the opposition parties (supporters of President Gbagbo) pulled their candidates out and called for a boycott of the elections after President Gbagbo was sent to the Hague for trial. Even many supporters of former President Bédié who initially sided with the new president boycotted these elections. So, only 15% of voters turned out to vote.
Lord, help us to pray earnestly for our president and leaders who govern, that they will humble themselves and seek Your guidance so that everything we do will shine the light of Your glory in a darkened world. In the mighty name of our Lord and Savior Jesus-Christ.

News - June 2011
Over the past several months the political situation in Côte d’Ivoire has been in an upheaval. This has greatly affected our family and co-laborers in the Lord at Ecole Chrétienne Adonaï.
Many people have had to flee their homes due to bombing of the neighborhood; some have had rebels break into their homes and pillage them taking cars and other belongings. Others have had to flee their homes because of exactions from the rebels within the new government’s militia forces who require the people to pay a weekly fee for ‘safety.’ They also randomly pillage homes, especially those who have not paid them.
We knew that the neighborhood around Ecole Chrétienne Adonaï had been pretty much deserted as people fled for their safety and that the school had closed (along with the other schools in the country) in March. We also were able to talk to one of the teacher’s who told us that the 5th grade teacher’s home had been pillaged and burned, so he lost everything. He and his family, by God’s grace, were able to flee and were in another city. However, after that phone call we were not able to get through to any of the school personnel until this week.
People have been returning to the neighborhood around the school and they were able to begin classes on Monday, June 6th. Seventy percent of the students and their families have returned.
The personnel and the families have been seriously traumatized and living on the bare minimum as salaries were not paid during that time. They also need to catch up on the rent and utility bills for the school and their homes. We are going to send them some finances to help. If the Lord Jesus leads you to help us help them, please send any gifts to Christian Education in Africa, Inc. (gifts are tax deductible) at 113 Youpon Drive, Lexington, SC 29073.
Here are some Bible passages and prayer points for Côte d’Ivoire and our brothers and sisters in the Lord:
Luke 10:29-37 and Matthew 25:31-40
Ø Please pray with us that God would give wisdom to the leaders of Côte d’Ivoire whether they are currently in power in the government or in leadership in opposition parties.
Ø Please pray that all in leadership positions not fall into the attitude of the unmerciful servant in Mt. 18:21-35, but that they understand the power of kindness. “As the sun makes ice melt, kindness causes misunderstanding, mistrust and hostility to evaporate.” Albert Schweitzer
“Kindness is a language the deaf can hear and the blind can see. Unfortunately it is often the first casualty in our battle with the clock.” Anonymous
Ø Pray these prayer points with us:
Ø From Psalm 143:3-4 – In the name of Jesus, I stand in the gap for those (Africans, Americans, Arabs, Asians, etc.) that the enemy has smitten their life down to the ground. I plead the blood of Jesus over those whom the enemy has persecuted their souls. I prophesy light to those whom the enemy has made to dwell in darkness. Lord, have mercy on those who are overwhelmed within and are desolate at heart.
Ø From Proverbs 24:17 – Father, I declare that I will not rejoice when my enemies fall, and my heart will not be glad when they stumble.
Ø From Proverbs 25:21-22 – Father, I have a revelation that if my enemies thirst, I must give them water. If my enemies are hungry, I must give them bread. If they mean evil against me, my good deeds toward them will heap coals of fire upon their heads, and the Lord shall reward me.
Ø From Proverbs 25:23 – Lord, help me to present myself well and to abstain from speaking negative things about others. Just as the north wind drives the rain away, so does a backbiting tongue and an angry countenance.
Ø From Proverbs 27:6 – God, deliver me from the “kiss of death”! Faithful are the wounds of a friend, but deceitful is the kiss of an enemy.
Ø From Isaiah 59:19 – God, I thank You that even when the enemy comes in like a flood, You will raise a standard against him.
Ø From Matthew 13:24-25 – In the name of Jesus, I bind the enemy that would sow tares among the wheat.
Ø From Luke 10:19 – Jesus, I thank You that I have power over all the power of my enemy.
Ø From Acts 13:9-10 – I bind the “enemy of righteousness.”
Ø From 1 Corinthians 15:26 – In the name of Jesus, I come up against the “last enemy” (the enemy of death).
Thank God for answering our prayers with break through in Jesus’ name.
Love from above from our hearts to each of your hearts,
Love in Jesus’ name,
Lucien and Cathy
